Writing For Audiences - Learning Log

Description of learning activity: This week was about writing for different audiences. We were required to write three pieces of text with the same subject but for different audiences. Each of the pieces used a different layout, i.e., letter or description.

What happened: When writing for different audiences, the language you use changes with it because each audience requires a different purpose for the information. The letter to the boyfriend was completely different to the description to the future employer. The former used a more colloquial tone and shared more personal and intimate details, whereas it would be inappropriate to address an employer personally. There is a more serious tone for the employer and the information selected is strictly career-related. Essentially, you want the employer to take you seriously, so the writing and language must reflect for this intended response. The structure also changes with the audience. For example, the description for the class wasn’t very formal and was bits of information whereas the employer’s description had a set structure of what needed to be communicated (introduction, career goals, etc.).

Reflection: The subject of writing about myself was quite daunting and felt like a broad topic. I was able to relay certain tone in my writing; however, I didn’t successfully select relevant information. The letter to the boyfriend was confusing for me because I assume this audience would be aware of who I am. I wasn’t sure what to include and what to leave out. Next time, I would probably plan and dot-point the most relevant facts about myself to include. I have learnt that when writing for an audience there is always an intended response from the audience you want to gain. To achieve this, you must relay a similar tone in your writing, e.g. serious, formal language for the employer.

What next: In order to improve writing for audiences, I need to prepare and organise the appropriate information for the audience. I can practice this new skill in assessments for my other subjects. It will improve my essay writing, as different topics require different styles of writing.
